The Inland Northwest Food Network is thrilled to announce that we will once again be offering the Power of Produce (PoP) Club at the Hayden Farmers Market throughout the summer of 2018! Our 2017 season was extremely popular (336 kids enrolled!) with rave reviews from kids, parents and farmers alike.

PoP Club is a fun and engaging children’s program held in cooperation with the Kootenai County Farmers Market.  The program seeks to encourage children to make healthy food choices by empowering them to shop for, grow and prepare fresh fruits and vegetables.

Children between the ages of 5-12 are eligible to participate in the program free of charge. Upon registering, they will given a reusable shopping bag and a PoP Club button. In addition, each week club members will receive a token worth $2 to purchase a fresh fruit, vegetable or plant at participating farmer booths at the market, or they can choose to save their tokens to buy a larger item such as a fruit tree.

A PoP Club booth will offer interactive, age-appropriate, cooking and gardening activities for club members.

The program will run weekly from June 2 – Sept 1, 2018 at the Hayden Farmers Market.

Inland Northwest Food NetworkMeet Carol Behrens, the new PoP Club Coordinator! Carol is a desert native but has lived in Northern Idaho for over nine years. She and her family also lived in rural Nebraska cattle country for many years, living remotely on a Nature Conservancy River Preserve. With her undergraduate degree in Outdoor Recreation, Carol worked as an Outreach Coordinator. After earning her Master’s degree in Elementary Education, Carol taught many grades levels. She is currently a Physical Education Teacher. She has combined her love for educating children with her commitment to health and wellness. Carol is passionate about teaching her students that a healthy lifestyle does not have to only be achieved through traditional competitive sports. Health also means being active in whatever brings you joy (things like hiking, canoeing, and gardening). She also teaches her students that nutritious wholesome fruits and vegetables are an integral part of a healthy and happy life. She and her family enjoy anything outdoors and doing woodworking projects around the house.
