Food for Thought Book Club – Salt: A World History

Inland NW Food NetworkFor this month’s read, the Book Club will be delving into Mark Kurlansky’s book “Salt, A World History.”  Until about 100 years ago, when modern geology revealed its prevalence, salt was once of the world’s most sought-after commodities. A substance so valuable it served as currency, salt has influenced the establishment of trade routes and cities, provoked and financed wars, secured empires and inspired revolutions. Populated by colorful characters and filled with fascinating details, Mark Kurlansky’s kaleidoscopic and illuminating history is a multilayered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

Held in conjunction with the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, the Food for Thought Book Club is free and open to the public on the first Wednesday of each month from 6 – 8:00 pm. Copies of the book can be reserved at the Library or purchased at The Well Read Moose in Coeur d’Alene.
