Food for Thought Book Club – June
Jun 3 2015 /6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
In partnership with the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, the INWFN presents a monthly book club open to anyone interested in food and all things food-related. June’s book is “Organic” by Peter Laufer. Copies of the book can be reserved at the library or purchased at the Well Read Moose.
When journalist Peter Laufer bites into some rancid walnuts that are supposedly organic, and a product of Kazakhstan, he sets off on an investigative journey to trace those walnuts and a can of “organic” beans origins back to their source. Along the way he learns how easily we are tricked into taking “organic” claims at face value.
This book reveals the dubious origins of food labeled organic. Laufer shows how we have been sold a questionable, highly suspect, and even false bill of goods by from highly corrupt governments and businesses overseas who pollute the organic market with food that is anything but. The organic label has no clear meaning; oversight is virtually nonexistent, and deception runs amok. Laufer investigates so-called organic farms in Europe and South America as well as in the Pacific Northwest.
