September 16/9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Take an adventure beneath the ground and explore the important role of composting in building healthy soil for your garden or farm. In this workshop, you will learn both the theoretical and the practical aspect of composting. We will begin the day indoors for a presentation on the following topics:
- Stone meals
- Compost tea
- Soil biology
- Soil chromatography
- Qualitative testing,
- Water management
- Arid dry-land water harvesting techniques
We will also get a bit more hands-on inside by preparing a soil chromatogram.
After lunch we will move to the Gathering Garden where we will observe some compost piles we built last spring as well as build a new one. Plan to get dirty! We also will be discussing techniques used in the garden such as mulches and cover crops, as well as making and applying compost tea.
Instructor: Ryan Herring has been working as a mechanical designer by trade for 9 years. In his spare time he enjoys gardening, composting, art and trying his hand at small-scale landscaping/gardening design, and more recently on farm sustainable/regenerative design. He has a Master Composter Certificate , a Permaculture Design Certificate and is also a Master Gardener. His yen for knowledge also led him to study about biodynamics. It was through that research that he was introduced to the works of Pfeiffer, soil chromatography, and qualitative analysis for soils, fruits, vegetables, etc. He has a design company called Soil Growth that focuses on permaculture & regenerative farming design.
